Pernet Makes Thanksgiving and Christmas a Little Brighter for Families

Pernet prepares for winter!

Pernet prepares for winter!

Winter’s coming!  Be READY! That was the cry of some 72 volunteers who gathered on Saturday, Nov. 19th to participate in multiple projects at Pernet. Community gardens at Pernet and Lafayette St. were put to bed, the framework for the Crompton Park ice rink was built, fresh paint spruced up some rooms on the third floor of Pernet, the land around the convent of the Little Sisters of the Assumption got a fresh look and trash was collected in Crompton Park. The area around Millbury Street was buzzing with activity as volunteers from Hector Reyes House, Green Island Residents and Friends, Carpenters Local 107, The CYC from Christ the King, students from Bryant University and Notre Dame Academy, AlphaPhiOmega from WPI joined forces on a rather cold morning. Volunteers young and old continue to be a GIFT to Pernet! THANKS to all who helped make our land and our agency more beautiful!

GET OUT THE VOTE IN GREEN ISLAND!

Pernet offers Leadership Training Academy to residents and friends of Green Island. This fall's workshop has focused on municipal elections. Residents have learned about how Worcester city government works, have registered 75 voters and recently sponsored a candidate’s night for District 4. Here's a link to the T&G article on the candidate forum.

Pernet Family Health Cookout Event

Pernet Family Health Cookout Event

Anyone driving by Crompton Park on Saturday, June 4 was treated to a "Norman Rockwell" scene of families relaxing, playing games, picnicking, and socializing under a perfectly blue sky with ideal temperature.

A group of volunteers who call themselves "Green Island Residents and Friends" planned and carried out the event from noon until 3pm as part of a campaign to get neighbors into the Park, and encourage them to use it as an extension of their backyards.

Over 250 Green Island residents enjoyed the free cookout sponsored by Pernet Family Health Service and supported by many local businesses including Widoff's Bakery, Table Talk Pie, Polar Corporation, Trader Joe's, WalMart and Sam's Club, Niman Supply, and Price Chopper Supermarket.

History

After meeting in April with City Councilor Barbara Haller and Robert Antonelli, Assistant Commissioner for Worcester's  Parks, Recreation and Cemetery, residents participating in Pernet's Leadership Training Academy decided they wanted to make Crompton Park safer, cleaner and more enjoyable for local families. With the already-established Green Island Residents and Friends group (GIRF) they designed an event that they hoped would bring people into the Park where they would meet one another and take an active role in making the park more user-friendly.

The gathering included games for children, tables and chairs for chatting or playing cards, traditional outdoor games such as races, volleyball, and tug-of-war, a pie-eating contest, and free food for all!

The program included an appearance by Officers McCarthy and Farber of the Worcester Police Department.  Besides talking with children and adults, they encouraged the group to partner with the WPD by being active in Crompton Park and reporting any problem behaviors.

Pernet Family Health Service also gave recognition to several community volunteers who help Pernet carry out its mission of supporting the long-term enhancement of family and community life.
