Green Island Garden:
SUMMER 2018
REVIEW

Picture
Describe beautifying Worcester:
  • Making Worcester look cleaner and brighter; showing the community what we are capable of
  • Planting; cleaning around the planters; cleaning around the streets; community service
  • Picking up trash around the community and planting different plants to make the community have color and make it look cleaner

What businesses do you collaborate with?
  • Carpenters Union, Fairway Beef, Harrahy’s, Commerce Bank, and Kelly Square

Why is beautifying Worcester important?
  • It is important because we need to keep the community clean and to keep the animals and humans healthy
  • It is important because if we have a clean and beautiful community, we can all live in a healthy environment

Describe the garden you are growing:
  • We have about 10 beds with greens, cucumbers, watermelons
  • We also have butterfly bushes that attract bees and butterflies to help us pollinate and improve the environment
  • There are many flowers and we grow vegetables – tomatoes, collard greens, kale, green beans, and our garden is tidy and clean

What have you harvested?
  • Oregano, tomatoes, cucumbers, kale, swiss chard, collard greens, cilantro, eggplant, green beans, watermelon, and hot peppers

How many pounds of produce have you harvested?
  • We have donated over twenty pounds of produce; roughly 90 pounds

What have you learned in nutrition class?
  • Different recipes
  • Urban and local farming
  • How to cook and prepare different foods; you need to use certain measurements for different kinds of meals; we learned how to cut fruits and vegetables

What was your favorite recipe to prepare?
  • Berry pancake roll-up
  • Greek salad wrap

What other activities have you done?
  • Pen pals to third graders

What are Pernet’s Values?
  • To try to make Worcester look good by helping the community in small ways
  • To help people in need with food and baby stuff

How can you connect Pernet’s values with the work you have done this summer?
  • We can try to meet the goals/values Pernet expects to show the community and teach them
  • I have helped out with the pantry and baby food
  • Whatever we harvest goes back to the community

Green Island Gardens: Summer 2018 Overview

Three more days left until we complete the 2018 Green Island Gardens 6-Week Summer YouthWorks Program!

Overview of Program:
Mission: Green Island Gardens’ (GIG) mission is to beautify the retail district and residential area. In the Green Island and Canal District neighborhoods, GIG shows beauty and pride in the neighborhood and engages the community in gardening.

The Community Garden
The Garden is the heart of this program. It beautifies and provides fresh, local produce to the neighborhood. The Green Island Community Garden is all organic and all the material is used from local stores or businesses. In our garden, you will also find Native Plants and Perennial Flowers that help promote biodiversity, and shelter and food for wildlife!

Planter Initiative
The main objective of the planter initiative is to make the Green Island and Canal District Neighborhood more inviting and attractive. We partner with local businesses to maintain planters and clean up store fronts.

Neighborhood Clean-Ups
Neighborhood Clean-ups are another way that the Green Island Gardens Program helps to beautify and keep our neighborhood and waterways clean. We dispose of trash throughout the neighborhood, including community green spaces such as Crompton Park.

Here are some pictures from this summer from our AIDS Project Worcester Community Garden fieldtrip, Central Mass Youth Jobs Coalition site visit, Nutrition Class with UMASS Extention Nutrition Education Program, and daily work around the neighborhood! Hope you enjoy!
