The Children’s Trust Fathers & Families Network Protective Factors Series Rationale
Strengthening Families™ is research – informed approach to increase family strengths. It’s based on engaging families and communities in building five protective factors: Parental Resilience; Social Connections; Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development; Concrete Supports in Times of Need; and Social and Emotional Competence of Children. Research shows that when these five Protective Factors are robust in families, child abuse and neglect is decreased and optimal development of children is increased. The Fathers and Families Network (FFN) has linked the protective factors with research on father engagement to offer families a more comprehensive model of wellness.
